Looking back, moving forward

2012 has been a most eventful year in my life. I can hardly fathom it. The year started with my weighing the decision of accepting a fellowship in Memphis, followed immediately by a month in Honduras. That was an eye-opening experience - my first time working as a physician in a mission hospital. In March my dad's mom turned 90 and my mom's mom passed away unexpectedly. In April I took my family medicine boards and in June I graduated from residency. In July I went to Ecuador for 6 weeks - my first gig as an attending physician rather than a resident. The end of September I left my little house and my friends in South Carolina to move to Memphis and start a new job in a new clinic. In November my dad's mom passed away.  In December I turned 30, survived the Mayan apocalypse, and finally got my hospital privileges and started working in the hospital after Christmas - in fact, I've delivered 7 babies in the last 4 days!  [As comfortable as I had gotten with the full-time outpatient work in the clinic - 10 days on, 4 days off - once I got back in the hospital I remembered how much I really love it.  And this is what I came here for, after all.] This year has been full of comings and goings, endings and beginnings, goodbyes and greetings, losses and gains.  C'est la vie, eh?

I'm ending this year much as I ended the last - in my pjs, sitting on the couch with my dog, sipping hot tea, watching a marathon of The Twilight Zone. It's kinda nice, actually -  a smidgen of continuity in these ever-changing times. As I take a cue from Janus and look both ways as we cross this threshold, I can say I am most grateful for the people in my life - here and elsewhere - who continue to enrich my life. I only hope I can do the same for them.

Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy new year!

Congratulations on all your accomplishments.

I'm sitting in my pj's watching Star Wars. I went to bed watching it last night and got home from work today and it was still on. :)

Have a fantastic New Year!

From DA
Wanted to say thanks for your writing this year and that I am way impressed that you have managed to do it while being a resident. ( I spent many years doing psych evals in ERs and know your pain). May the muse be good to you this year and that you have a chance to write between catching babies.
