The things that make me happy are pretty random, and some of them are very silly, but here goes...

For some reason, wind chimes always make me happy. Whenever I hear them, I pause for a minute, take a deep breath, and smile.  I think it's because I associate the sounds with some of the most carefree moments of my childhood.  It brings me back to my grandparents' house where I would spend weeks at a time in the summer. I remember spending hours in the big porch swing looking up at the too blue sky through a canopy of oak leaves. Sometimes their big bulldog would be snuggled up with me. Sometimes I'd be watching cicadas shed their pupal forms and take wing for the first time. Sometimes I'd just follow my thoughts wherever they led.  I'd stay out there until dusk fell and I could chase lightening bugs.  It was just so peaceful. And the soundtrack to all of this was birdsong and wind chimes.

My parents weren't really fans of wind chimes. I think my mom found them annoying.  There was a set in the basement, but the neighbors had some I could listen to. I'd go sit on the back porch and close my eyes, feel the breeze on my face and listen to the soothing sound. I'd forgotten about it for a while, but a couple of years ago I mentioned to my folks how much I'd always liked the sound of wind chimes and that I should get some.  They bought me a very nice set for Christmas that year. They hang by my front door and whenever the breeze picks up their melodious tones take me back to a simpler time.

I think peaceful is the keyword. That's the feeling.
