100 random things that make me happy: #4

Feeling a bit nostalgic today...

I live in a small southern town in the foothills of the Blue Ridge. It's a sleepy little town, for the most part.  My home is located in a residential area just a couple of blocks from downtown with its little shops and the old depot. The railroad tracks divide the city into north and south and both freight and passenger trains rumble through at all hours. There is something haunting and plaintive about the sound of the train whistle and the cars on the rails. I find it comforting. I think it's because my mom loves trains and has such happy memories associated with them. She passed that affinity to me.  Now whenever I see or hear a train I pause to listen and let the pleasantly wistful feeling wash over me.

I've always had a fondness for miniature things. And there's just something about trains, of all sizes.

Pretty tune!
My first home was a few lots away from tracks. I've always wondered why people hate living near them because the sound - and counting the cars - always made me happy too.

(but then I didn't live near a whistle stop so maybe that's a factor...)

When I was a little girl the local *gang* of us used to have a meeting place under a road bridge over a main railway line! It was like a concrete ledge and, looking back fifty-odd years, incrediable dangerous! I'm sure our parents didn't know...but then none of us came to any harm...anyhoo, I'll get to the point... The trains were mostly steam trains and as they went past our little gang would be enveloped in the steam and that distinctive smell...we never failed to be thrilled and we always got covered in soot spots! Those were the days...in comparison electric trains are so mundane...

There's something romantic about steam trains. And I can just picture a bunch of steam-enshrouded little English scamps hanging out under a bridge. :-D

I used to live in an old house a block and a half from the tracks. I miss hearing the sound of the train, the sound of the whistle as it approached the town. It was distinctly comforting.
