100 random things that make me happy: #8

When dusk settles over the warm earth little points of light start to twinkle and dance over the grass. There's something magical about watching the fireflies. I spent many a childhood summer evening catching lightning bugs. I love the incandescent glow of the little black and red and yellow insects; I love the pungent odor they leave behind on your hands; I love the way they sort of hover making it easy to scoop them out of the air into your cupped palm.  Every night when I look out and see their gentle glow it makes me happy.

You may like the result of the existence of honey bees, the crops they pollinate so that you can have food, the beeswax that's in so many products, perhaps even the honey.

Whilst I understand the entire ecosystem of the planet depends upon bees and now, apparently, cockroaches, it doesn't mean that I have to like the little blighters...

Hee! I like bugs. There are a few varieties that creep me out, but in general I'm a fan. I also have an affinity for birds, so this might be the reason for some of my fannish leanings...;-)

Mmmm...not that keen on birds either...they'e all right if they stay in the sky soaring above me but if they get near me...I get spooked!

I read something recently that said everything we eat from the land will have a small percentage of insect in it...I suppose I must have known on some level but I wish I hadn't read it...

Have you ever been to Gettysburg? I'm not sure one is supposed to climb the observation stations after dark, but when we did we saw a sea of fireflies rising from the long grasses, a spread of lights as thick as the stars above.

I have, a long time ago, but not at night. I bet that is a moving sight - lights over the battlefield. When I was in Honduras the fireflies were so thick it was unreal!
