100 random things that make me Happy: #9

I was sitting out at the lake on Friday evening as the remnants of daylight faded listening to the water lapping at the shoreline when I became aware of the droning of cicadas in the background. The nighttime insect noises are so ubiquitous in the summer that sometimes I don't notice them at all, but when I tune in I can hear the chirping of the crickets and the lazy drumming buzz of their bigger brethren. The sound of cicadas is one that I always associate with hot Southern summers - lazy days in the shade, watermelon and lemonade, sweat and sweet tea, warm star-soaked nights.  It makes me happy.

I associate cicadas with Iowa. On a summer night the whole world comes alive with sound, the cicadas, crickets, the gentle thud of June bugs throwing themselves stupidly against any solid object that stands between where they are and where they think they're going, bats, a hundred other things I can't identify.

The sound of water lapping at the shoreline with the droning of cicadas in the background sounds blissful.

Bugs...still not a fan! I've v.rarely heard them in the UK but here in Greece they are part and parcel of everyday life and do remind me of hot summer holidays...oh, that's because I'm actually on a hot summer holiday...at least until tomorrow! :O(
