What is your favorite opening line of a book, and why?

 "Call me Ishmael."

It's probably overused and trite sounding, but I love that line.  Gives me chill-bumps.  My dad read Moby Dick to me when I was a little girl - probably 3rd or 4th grade.  We'd already tackled Treasure Island, Tom Sawyer, Pilgrim's Progress, and the Little House on the Prairie series among others.  I was terrified of Queequeg and fascinated by the idea of St. Elmo's fire.  I could see the white whale and feel the movement of the ocean in my father's voice.  And I've been enamored of tales of the sea ever since.  Some of my fondest childhood memories are of my dad reading to me at night before bed.  There are times that I'd like nothing better than to cuddle up to my daddy again and listen to him tell me a story.

See, this is the perfect example of a post I really enjoyed but am at a loss for how to respond. What a beautiful memory, and how poetic and truthful you are describing...just life. I feel like any comment of mine will just be clumsy and kind of a besmirchment on it. Huh.

I just find it gratifying that you took the time to read my ramblings and that the idea, the feeling, that I wanted to convey made it across. Thank you!
